Project description

The Genomic Data Infrastructure (GDI) project brings together national agencies, research organizations, and technology providers from 22 countries to establish a cross-border federated network of national genomic collections, combined with other relevant data, with the aim of advancing data-driven biomedical research and personalized medicine solutions for the benefit of European citizens. This project is designed to support the European 1+ Million Genomes (1+MG) initiative.
Specifically, the GDI initiative will foster the development, deployment, and operation of sustainable data access infrastructures in each participating country, including the legal frameworks, operational procedures, and ethical principles necessary to foster and maintain citizen trust in cross-border access to highly sensitive personal data. It will make a data network of over one million genomic sequences available for research and clinical reference, creating unprecedented opportunities for regular, transnational, multi-stakeholder action in the field of personalized medicine for common, rare, and infectious diseases. Thus, the GDI is a critical element of Europe’s ambition to lead the integration of genomics into healthcare. The GDI project is designed to interact with other actors working to achieve this ambition, through incremental steps that promote alignment with a dynamic roadmap.
