Project description

The French Institute of Bioinformatics (IFB) is a certified French research infrastructure that brings together 21 member platforms, 7 contributing platforms and 8 associated teams, to develop services, training and innovative projects in bioinformatics. It aims to cover all areas of expertise in bioinformatics and its fields of application: fundamental research, health, agriculture, environment, microbiology, etc.). The IFB is also the French node of the European ELIXIR infrastructure (ESFRI).

The IFB’s digital infrastructure is currently distributed across 12 sites, operated by 10 member platforms. Each node deploys an HPC cluster and/or cloud computing infrastructure alongside the 2 IFB “core” resources. The NNCR IFB (National Network for Computing Resources) was initially funded by the PIA1 RENABI-IFB, since supplemented by regional (CPER) and European (FEDER) funds (see section 5.2 for recent funding).

This project, ABBA (Accelerating Bioinformatics for Biology Applications), aims to complement the computing equipment funded by the PIA3 MUDIS4LS (Mutualised Digital Spaces for FAIR Life Sciences) project. ABBA is focusing on increasing the use of GPU-based servers and associated storage to meet the growing demand for this type of equipment and the latest algorithmic developments. Thanks to their much higher number of computing units than traditional CPUs, GPUs allow for significant gains in processing time and thus absorb, at least in part, the increase in the volume of data to be processed.

As for applications based on deep learning or artificial intelligence (AI), accelerated by GPUs, they are only at the beginning but have already seen the emergence of tools like Alphafold2 which has revolutionized structural biology.
