Our network consortium

The IFB network, coordinated by IFB-core, is based on a national network of bioinformatics platforms for life sciences communities that actively contribute to service, training, and R&D missions. These platforms engage at different levels in the structuring activities of the national infrastructure, depending on their orientation (service or research) and their resources.

It brings together 21 member platforms, 7 contributing platforms and 8 associated teams which cover all areas of bioinformatics and all thematic areas of fundamental biology and its applications (health, environment, agronomy).

All the managers of member platforms as well as the associated platforms and teams constitute one of the IFB’s governance bodies, the CIPI .

What is a bioinformatics platform?

A bioinformatics platform is a specialised infrastructure that provides tools, services, and computing resources for large-scale biological data analysis. Overall, a platform provides one or more of the following services:

  • software for data analysis in genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, etc ;
  • Computing resources (Cluster, Cloud) ;
  • expert services in data analysis modelling, visualisation and biological interpretation ;
  • training courses for optimal use of the available tools.

What is a member platform?

A member platform is a team primarily focused on services, which participates in the three main types of activities carried out by national research support infrastructures: services, training and innovative developments. A member platform undertakes to develop a service that is open beyond its unit of assignment, to adopt a quality approach, to participate periodically in full cost analyses and the collection of indicators, and to allocate sufficient permanent human resources to ensure effective support for its activities. Its membership is validated by its supervisory authorities.

What is a contributing platform or associated team?

A contributing platform is a team primarily focused on services and involved in at least one of the three main types of activities of national research support infrastructures: services, training, or innovative developments. A contributing platform undertakes to allocate a sufficient number of permanent human resources to ensure effective support for its activities. It is not required to develop periodic participation in comprehensive cost analyses and the collection of indicators. Its membership is validated by its supervisory authorities.

An associate team is a team whose activities are primarily research-oriented, but which participates in IFB services, training, and/or innovative developments. An associate team is not required to develop periodic participation in comprehensive cost analyses and indicator collection, nor to commit to permanent human resources. Its membership does not require validation by its supervisory authorities.

How can a platform join the IFB?

We are in the process of structuring to become a GIS, Scientific Interest Group. We are therefore not currently welcoming new platforms. To be continued

We will inform you shortly of the results of this structuring.

National and European projects

The IFB relies on its network of platforms to operate its services, respond to calls for projects and participate in R&D projects.

Thanks to its commitment to developing bioinformatics infrastructure and scientific research in biology and health, IFB contributes to or coordinates national scientific projects through France 2030 (formerly PIA), PEPR and other French funding programmes, as well as European projects through ELIXIR.

ELIXIR CoS are technical projects that guide future services, standards adoption, or scientific development. They also foster connections between ELIXIR nodes. The main ongoing projects to which ELIXIR-FR contributes or coordinates can be found on the dedicated page .
