When you visit a website published by the French Institute of Bioinformatics (IFB/ELIXIR-FR), information may be stored in “cookie” files placed on your device’s browser (computer, tablet, or mobile phone). This page explains what a cookie is, what it is used for, and how you can accept or refuse those that are not essential for the website’s operation and management.

What is a cookie?

A cookie is a small text file containing small amounts of information (including a unique identifier such as a session number, language preference, a security code, the name of the server that placed it, and possibly an expiration date) and may be temporarily stored on your device’s hard drive when you visit a website using your browser, depending on your preferences for cookies not essential to the website’s operation. Cookies are managed by your web browser, and you can view them by right-clicking on the webpage and selecting “Inspect code”.

Only the issuer of a cookie can modify the information it contains. A cookie can be either a session cookie or a permanent (or persistent) cookie.

A session cookie persists only during the browsing session; it is deleted when the browser is closed. A persistent cookie is installed for a specific period. This type of cookie remains on the device until it expires or until it is deleted from the computer via browser settings or extensions.

The cookie does not personally identify you, but only the browser on your device. Some cookies require your prior consent before being installed on your device.

What are cookies used for?

Essential cookies

These are cookies placed exclusively by the website publisher. They are essential for browsing the site. These cookies cannot be disabled or configured, otherwise you will no longer be able to access the site, its services, and/or the display will be altered. They allow you to use the site’s main features and secure your connection. Therefore, placing these cookies does not require your prior consent. Their lifespan generally does not exceed the duration of your session.

Functional cookies

These cookies are necessary for the website to function. Their placement does not require your prior consent. These cookies allow us to:

  • to establish anonymous statistics on the traffic and use of the various elements comprising the site to allow its publisher to administer and improve said site.
  • to adapt the presentation of the site to the display preferences of your terminal (language used, display resolution, operating system used, etc.) during your visits to the site, according to the hardware and software for viewing or reading that your terminal includes.

The IFB/ELIXIR-FR website uses the Matomo audience analysis tool, which complies with GDPR specifications. Matomo may place several cookies with lifespans ranging from the session duration or a few tens of minutes to 11 months.

Third-party cookies:

  • content viewing by hosting services such as YouTube, Dailymotion, etc. for videos.
  • sharing information on social networks that allow you to share site content with other people or to let these other people know about your visit or your opinion regarding content on our site.

Cookies placed by these third parties can remember the pages and websites you have visited and may collect personal data such as your IP address and share it with third parties. These cookies allow advertising networks, in particular, to show you targeted and personalized ads. Their lifespan varies from a session duration or a few tens of minutes to several years.

The IFB/ELIXIR-FR website you are visiting has no control over the process used by content hosts and social networks to collect information about your browsing, and associated with the personal data they hold.

You can manage the placement of these cookies. To view certain content offered by IFB/ELIXIR-FR, you will first need to accept cookies from these third parties.

How to manage cookies placed by this IFB/ELIXIR-FR website?

Cookies not whose sole purpose is to enable or facilitate communication by electronic means or which are not strictly necessary for the provision of an online communication service at the express request of the user require the prior consent of the internet user.

Trackers whose purpose is limited to the anonymous measurement of the site or application’s audience, to meet various needs necessary for the operation and routine administration of a website, are not subject to consent.

To manage the cookies placed by the IFB/ELIXIR-FR website, you have several complementary options:

  • Accept or reject non-essential or non-functional cookies by clicking on this link: privacy settings . This link is present in the footer of every page of the site.
  • You can exercise your choices with third-party companies by consulting their privacy policies. There you will find information on the purposes for which they use your data, including advertising, and the browsing information they may collect through application buttons available on the website you visit. You can then configure your user accounts to accept or refuse the tracking technologies placed by these companies.
  • Control cookies using your browser settings. Most of these trackers can be disabled by configuring your browser to only accept trackers from the sites you visit (reject “third-party sites,” check the “Do not track me” box on most browsers) in your browser’s preferences. In “Private Browsing” mode, cookies will only disappear when you close the browser windows on the site.

How do I configure browsers?

To manage cookies according to your preferences, we invite you to configure your browser settings, taking into account the purpose of the cookies:

  • The internet browser can be configured to warn you before a cookie is installed.
  • The browser can also be configured to refuse all types of cookies or only third-party cookies.
  • Any cookie already installed on the computer can be deleted.
  • Each browser must be configured separately to refuse cookies.
